The front line in public services
By John Watts
I work for the local council in the highways department, and from october untill march I am involved in the winter maintenance, which in voles loading and driving the gritting lorry's that the department owns. I have to work long hours when it's snowing often putting in thirteen hour shifts, now I'm not complaining or looking for sympathy, has I get paid very well for the hours I work and I love driving in the snow, to be honest I'm like a big kid in the snow. As I live high up in the south wales valleys in the winter months it can get very cold during this time. What the public don't realise about gritting is that under -5c the grit or salt doe's not melt the ice. And you can grit all day and night but if it's snowing all that time the snow will just lay on top of the grit and cover it. You can only plough the snow from the road surface and wait for the snow to stop falling before you can grit the road, the grit on the back of the gritter is to give it more grip when it is ploughing. So next time it's snowing and you see a gritter ploughing and it's not gritting you'll know why. Another thing the cold weather doe's to the roads is to create potholes, the water goes into the cracks in the tarmac and then freezes. Well when water freezes it expands, and that pushes the tarmac from the road surface, and to make matters worse the grit doe's the same,it dilutes in water and then turns back to a crystal when the weather gets warmer. I hope that my little intel has given you a better understanding of what gritting is about, and why the roads are full of potholes after the bad weather.
